* USA - Should buses have seat belts? - Crashes across the nation prompt authorities to consider a number of measures to protect passengers
Plattsburgh,NY,USA -The Plattsburgh Press Republican, by KIM SMITH DEDAM -Oct 08, 2006: -- If seat-belt laws save lives, then how come buses carrying people around the U.S. don't have them? Seat-belt use accounts for a 55 percent greater chance of surviving a car accident, according to university studies... In a telephone interview, NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said adding seat belts was not the end-all answer, but "there will definitely be some type of restraint system along with the design of the bus."... "Occupant protection systems" may include stronger roof members, improved window safety and enhanced passenger restraint, he said... According to an NHTSA 2005-2009 priorities document published last year, federal rule-making on bus safety measures is due out in 2007... It's unclear who will be expected to enforce them...
