Purchases - Ireland - All buses come at once for embattled minister
Bray,Ireland -Unison.ie -Sept 2nd 2006: -- As Transport Minister for the past two years, Martin Cullen seems to have been constantly in the public eye - and not always for the kind of reasons he would want... Cullen introduced a raft of new penalty point offences a few months back in the hope of making a significant impression on the rising toll of road deaths... This week, at the same time as introducing penalty points for hand-held mobile phone usage, he has been able to hail a rare and significant reduction in the road death toll during the frequently tragedy-laden month of August... And, to add to all that, he managed to convince the bus unions that they should not go ahead with a planned strike on Thursday night. He promised them 100 extra buses for Dublin Bus and 160 more for Bus Éireann, costing a total of €80m, thus placating them sufficiently to call off their action...
