Exploitation - Ireland - South Africans 'paid €2.80 an hour' on bus contract
Cork,Ireland -Irish Examiner -19 July 2006: -- Another alleged incident of migrant worker exploitation is emerging today following reports that a group of South Africans fitting seatbelts on school buses are being paid less than half the minimum wage... Reports this morning say the 19 workers were being paid just €2.80 an hour, have not been receiving payslips and have not yet been paid for overtime... The men are employed by a South African company that has been hired by an Irish firm fitting seatbelts in all Bus Éireann school buses as part of a government contract... This morning's reports say a number of Polish people directly employed by the Irish firm are being paid €10 an hour for doing the same work...
