Lima, Peru-AP/WTNH (New Haven,CT,USA) -Apr. 2, 2006: -- The type of crash that killed a Stamford couple and 10 other American tourists last month in Chile is more common than first realized... A non-governmental safety monitoring group in Peru says more than 500 people died in crashes on mountain roads there between July 2004 and July 2005... Another 25-hundred more were hurt... Similar deadly crashes have occurred in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile... Officials say reckless drivers, combined with unsafe makeshift buses, often are to blame. A legal and political battle is now raging to get those vehicles off the roads...
