Bus Passes - UK - Are an operators' gravy train?
Wales,UK -Wales/Western Mail, by Rhodri Clark -Apr 1, 2006: -- Passenger journeys on local buses in Wales rose nearly 9% in the first three years of Wales' free travel scheme, reversing decades of decline... The figures for 2006-07 should look even better, as entrepreneurial bus managers get to grips with the scheme's small print... Shamrock will collect four payments for each pensioner who travels from Merthyr to Swansea and back... Clayton Jones said some pensioners living alone ride buses to avoid feeling lonely... He says some pensioners ride buses to save on heating their homes... These uses of bus passes all help to improve quality of life for older people and to ensure bus services survive for the whole of the community to use... But is the money spent on the concessionary scheme providing the benefits intended in the first place?... Few would argue that free travel for pensioners should be scrapped, but it would be comforting to know the way the money is spent is at least being monitored...
