LONDON,UK -Daily Telegraph Saturday/United Press International/USA -Oct. 29, 2005: -- Few of London's distinctive red double-decker buses remain, having been replaced by more modern single-deck buses. Only one route remains... However, some buses will remain on "heritage routes" for tourists... The red Routemasters entered service about 50 years ago, but modern cost-cutting did them in. The two-story buses needed a driver and a conductor, while the new single-story bus needs only a driver... In addition, the double-decker buses were considered less safe because of the open entrance platforms. They were also less accessible for the disabled...
