Security - UK - Violence on the buses

Birmingham,UK -expressandstar.com -Oct 29, 2005: -- Almost half of all passengers have refused to travel on West Midlands trains, buses and trams at night because of fears they could be attacked... A shocking survey was released today as figures reveal there are dozens of "unsettling incidents" on public transport every day in the region... The report by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority into safety and security claims that one in every 237 trips on public transport sees people experience violent or aggressive behaviour... It states: 1) A total of 44 per cent of passengers have refused to use a bus at night because of fear of attack... 2) Buses are not clean and smoking bans on board are ignored and not enforced... 3) Drivers are not given enough support by their bosses... 4) CCTV only has limited success in stopping violent attacks and crime... Councillor Bateman, who is also a director at Travel West Midlands, said he was unable to speak for Centro's figures but stated there had been just 167 assaults on his firm's buses last year, a tiny fraction of the one million people it carries every day...
