Purchases - USA - Justice Department reach settlement over city buses
WASHINGTON,DC,USA -Detroit Free Press/AP -Nov 3, 2005 -- The Detroit Department of Transportation would expand programs to retire buses that lack functioning lifts and make repairs under a settlement announced Thursday by the Justice Department... The settlement agreement, which must be approved by a federal judge, would call on the city to continue to retire buses without lifts, repair and maintain lifts and buy new buses. Drivers and mechanics would also be trained in deploying the lifts and helping disabled passengers... DDOT Director Norman White said the city upgraded its service to people in wheelchairs by purchasing 120 buses equipped with front-door ramps that lower to the ground to allow boarding. Meanwhile, 196 old buses that could not be repaired have been retired...
