* USA / Mexico - Bus hijackings in Tamaulipas becoming more common

Brownsville,TX,USA -The Brownsville Herald -October 07, 2010: -- The hijacking of buses has become more common as the violence has increased, they say... The death last week of a Brownsville college student who was shot while traveling by bus in southern Tamaulipas is not an isolated case, say recent travelers to Mexico. Jonathon William Torres Casares, 18, died last week while returning from Ciudad Mante where he visited relatives, said officials at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College... Torres is believed to be one of two people killed when the bus he was riding in was hijacked, according to a U.S. official who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media... A businessman from Tampico who fled the violence in Mexico and relocated to Brownsville said such hijackings have become common... Juan Perez (not his real name) said he brought his family here after months of extortion and receiving threats from the Zeta criminal organization. He said that after establishing his residence here, he would regularly go by bus to Tampico to check on the family business... His trips came to a halt in mid-August when the bus he was riding in between Tampico and Matamoros was stopped by a group of armed men claiming to be Zetas...


* UK - Bristol buses withdrawn over robberies

Bristol,EN,UK -BBC News -8 October 2010: -- Evening bus services in one part of Bristol are being temporarily withdrawn after two robberies in a week... Police say the same man threatened two drivers and stole money on September 25 and 6 October in the Henbury area of the city... First Bus has now withdrawn evening services on Crow Lane, where the incidents took place... A statement from the firm said the decision was "made with the safety of passengers and staff in mind"... * Australia - Bus assaults jump 50 per cent

Sydney,NSW,Australia -The Daily Telegraph/The Sunday Telegraph, by BRIANA DOMJEN -October 10, 2010: -- Attacks and robberies on buses have increased by 50 per cent in the past two years with the northern beaches, Maroubra and Newtown declared the most dangerous routes...   Almost 500 passengers made reports to police after they were assaulted, spat at or had valuables stolen while catching a bus last year - up from 332 in 2007- NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures show...   Bus drivers are fearful about working the night shift on the most troubled routes, concerned for the safety of passengers. Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) secretary Raul Baonza said it is left to the drivers to intervene and break up a fight if a passenger is under attack...  The escalating number of attacks is creating apprehension among drivers who have to work night shifts in trouble spots...
