* South Caroline - CARTA rolling out 11 new environmentally friendly buses
Charleston,SC,USA -The Charleston Regional Business Journal, by Amanda Click -Jul 15, 2010: -- The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) has added 11 new environmentally friendly busses to their fleet. The new buses reduce carbon emissions by about 90% compared older models, which rolled off the line back in 1996... According to the Charleston Regional Business Journal's article, the new busses have larger windows, lower floors for easier access, more handrails and stanchions for standing passengers, and handicap ramps instead of time-consuming lifts... * Massachusetts - Green buses are coming to Logan
Boston,MASS,USA -The Boston Globe, by Katie Johnston Chase -July 15, 2010: -- A fleet of 50 alternative-fuel buses -- a mix of diesel-electric hybrids and vehicles run by compressed natural gas -- will be in place by late 2013, replacing the 94 diesel-powered rental car buses and 26 aging compressed-natural-gas buses that transport passengers between terminals, to the Blue Line MBTA station, and to the economy parking lots. The new buses are bigger and will be shared by multiple rental car companies, which means fewer of them will be needed... The Massachusetts Port Authority board expects the new bus fleet to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,840 tons during the at least 12 years they will be in operation...
* Kentucky - TARC shows new hybrid buses
River City,KY,USA -The Kentuckiana Green Courier-Journal, by Sheldon S. Shafer -July 9, 2010: -- Transit Authority of River City officials unveiled nine new gas-electric hybrid buses on Friday that they say are better for the environment, more fuel efficient, easier to maintain and smoother to ride than older diesel-fueled buses... With 12 hybrid buses purchased earlier, TARC's fleet now has 21 environmentally friendly coaches... Each of the nine new energy-efficient buses cost $558,000. The federal government paid for seven of them and state funds paid for the other two... TARC officials said the benefits of hybrids include improved air quality and reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulates, and the buses have lower maintenance costs and consume less fuel... The hybrids were manufactured primarily by the Gillig Corp. of Hayward, Calif., and the propulsion systems were made by Allison Transmission GM of Indianapolis... * Canada - Government funding dished out for new school buses fleet
Burns Lakes,BC,Canada -Burns Lakes District News/BC Local News, by Rebecca Billard -July 13, 2010: -- School District 91 will receive $855,500 in funding for the purchase of seven new diesel school buses as part of a $12.5-million investment by the province... Funding for the new buses includes four 76-passenger buses and three 84-passenger buses... The funding announcement comes on top the School District 91 announcement that the will be cuts to the district bussing system... Sterling Olson, secretary treasurer for School District 91, attributes the conflicting situation with government funding to district transportation as being due to additional capital grants that can be applied for... * Wiscosin - Milwaukee County rolls out 90 clean diesel buses
Milwaukee County,WIS,ISA -The Journal Sentinel, by Sharif Durhams -July 14, 2010: -- Milwaukee County's bus system unveiled on Wednesday the first of 90 new buses purchased to replace those in its aging fleet... The clean diesel buses cost a total of nearly $33 million. About half of that money came from the federal stimulus package... Milwaukee County plans to buy 35 more buses in 2011, according to MCTS... The new buses, manufactured by New Flyer, will feature a new paint scheme on the outside and a new color scheme on the inside... Gainesville,FLA,USA -The Gainesville Sun, by Patrick Annesty -July 14, 2010: -- About 50 employees and spectators gathered at Regional Transit System headquarters Tuesday, enduring the midday sun to check out the latest additions to the RTS bus fleet... The Gillig Low-Floor buses run on B20 biodiesel, a mixture of 80 percent diesel fuel and 20 percent biofuel made from animal fat and vegetable oils... The "partially renewable" technology emits 6,000 tons less carbon monoxide and saves $150,000 in operating costs per year over traditional buses, Gomez said. Biodiesel gets 5 to 10 percent more miles per gallon than regular diesel. In addition, the 17 new buses will drop the average age of the fleet to from 9.6 years old to 7 years old, improving efficiency and reliability, RTS says... Gomez said the older buses being replaced will be auctioned off on eBay after they are salvaged for parts. He said the old buses can fetch anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000... * Iowa - 4 new city buses in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids,IOWA,USA -Eastern Iowa News Now, by Mary S. -15 July 2010: -- Four new buses are now on the street as part of a plan to renew the city’s bus fleet... The 2010 Gillig buses are heavy-duty with a low floor and easy-to-use wheelchair accessible ramp... Last year the Cedar Rapids Transit Division added four similar buses and plans to add five more buses next year... The buses were made in the USA at Gillig Corp. in Hayward, Calif., at a cost of $332,348 each. The American Resource and Recovery Act, known as the stimulus act, paid for the buses...
* Missouri - SPS to Buy 31 New Buses

The state’s recent cuts in transportation funding were not enough to keep Springfield Public Schools from buying new buses... The average retirement age of buses is 14 years old. Springfield’s bus fleet contains 51 buses that are older than that. 41 buses in the fleet are more than 20 years old... Bledsoe says the lease-purchase agreement with Commerce Bank makes it possible for the district to pay for the 31 new buses over the course of eight years. * Missouri - City Utilities unveils new paratransit buses
Springfield,MO,USA -KY3 News -Jul 16, 2010: -- Five new buses for disabled people are on the city’s streets. They replace City Utilities of Springfield's current paratransit fleet, which had been in use since 1997... They have a front entry door ramp for people in wheelchairs and include lower floors to help people who have trouble going up and down steps... The buses cost $650,000 and were funded by federal stimulus money. Disabled people can use them any time of the day or night, every day of the year. Last year they provided more than 17,000 rides...
* Kansas - New school bus company is ready to roll in Wichita

First Student, the largest bus company in the nation, is starting its contract with Wichita schools by bringing in a fleet of 624 new vehicles and drivers excited to operate them...
