PASSENGERS TRANSPORT INDUSTRY * UK - First Group in the fast lane after cost of motoring soars
Scotland,UK -The Scotsman, by William Lyons -2 Nov 2008: -- Sir Moir Lockhead, chief executive and deputy chairman of Aberdeen-based FirstGroup, will this week unveil a sharp increase in profits as the company benefits from the resilient public transport sector... The firm is expected to announce that bus revenues have soared as customers ditch their cars in the face of steep petrol prices.It will attribute its growth in popularity to initiatives such as First's "Fuel for Thought" campaign and a FuelBuster ticket, which allows passengers to fix their travel costs for six months... However, the main reason for FirstGroup's steep rise in profits is last year's £1.8bn acquisition of Laidlaw, the biggest schools bus operator in North America, which also owns the famous intercity Greyhound bus service...
