BUS TRAVELER'S STORY * Guatemala - My Experience of Riding Guatemalan Buses

San Angel,Guatemala -Jo's Jovial Jolly Jocular Journal (USA), by Jo -Mar 17, 2008: -- I have been catching buses a bit lately and I thoroughly enjoy the experience... The buses from San Ángel where I live are such old vans that I am surprised they are still going... Yesterday one of the buses that we were catching up the hill was going so slowly that the driver was leisurely checking his messages on his phone and suddenly got out a large pair of pliers. I thought he was going to start fixing the bus as we inched up the hill but no, he was just fiddling because he was bored... They drive the vans with the passenger door open so that more and more people can fit in. Then, when no one else can fit in the van because already people are sitting on other people’s knees or are standing with backs awkwardly bent over, their noses in some other passenger’s hair, men start to hang out the side of the van or off the back, clinging on to whatever they can find to hold onto and hoping they wont fall off (which wouldn’t be too dramatic at the speed we were going at)... (Video fromYouTube, by heidiandmatt -September 04, 2006: "Chicken Bus in Guatemala" - This is a funny video of us following a Chicken Bus between Chichicastenango and Los Encuentros. You can see the luggage guy trying to climb down the ladder and into the back door. Seeing that there's no room, he gives up and goes back up top. Only in Guatemala!)
