Over-loaded * India - City buses a menace

Public conveyance has to be comfortable and safe. But overloaded city buses fail on both the counts

Lucknow,India -The Times of India -10 Aug 2007: -- Passengers’ safety is zero in these buses which do not even provide any comfort. No wonder that these vehicles are a major cause of road accidents... Driver can easily lose control over an over-loaded bus and commuters who precariously cling on to the stairs of these buses can be bumped off by any passing by speeding vehicle... Despite the menace, the transport department, has not taken any punitive action against SRTC buses in the last two years. Regular drives were conducted to check over-loading when city buses were operated by private operators...


* Killer buses let loose on Ahmedabad’s roads

Ahmedabad,India -The Express India, by Kumar Anand -August 10, 2007: -- ... Such cases occur regularly on city roads. And, the culprit is a fleet of about 1,000 buses maintained by AMTS... With poor upkeep and a large number of untrained drivers, these private buses running on a contractual agreement with AMTS on Ahmedabad’s roads have taken the number of accidents from 350 in 2005 to about 1,000 now...
