* USA - A Concrete Plan to Speed Up Buses in Traffic

It is springtime in New York and everywhere bulbs are blooming. Daffodils. Crocuses. Bus bulbs.

New York,NY,USA -The New York Times, by WILLIAM NEUMAN -April 27, 2007: -- Bus bulbs?: ... In a program intended to help buses move more speedily down the traffic-and-construction-clogged streets of lower Broadway, the city is building a series of extensions to the sidewalk that should make it easier for buses to load and unload. In the taxonomy of traffic engineers, these extensions are known as bus bulbs... The new bus lane is intended to be different, partly because it will occupy the lane of traffic one lane from the curb, so it is less likely to be blocked by parked cars... The city will spend $355,000 to create the lane and the four bulbs, which include metal fencing designed to make them more visible... The bulbs and bus lane on Broadway are intended to encourage bus use in a stretch of Lower Manhattan where a large amount of construction regularly tangles traffic. The city plans to enhance five other bus routes, one in each borough, with dedicated lanes and high-tech equipment to make them more efficient... * New York - Transit: More trains, buses, carpools, bicycles
Forest Hills,NY,USA -The Forest Hills Ledger, by Philip Newman -26 April 2007: -- Mayor Bloomberg wants to clean up diesel-fueled school buses, curtail idling taxis and hired cars, relieve rush-hour crowding on subway trains and provide more fast express buses in subway-scarce areas such as eastern Queens as part of his 2030 master plan... The mayor said his plan also includes achieving a "state of good repair" of roads, subways and railroads for the first time in history as well as providing dedicated bus and high-occupancy vehicle lanes on East River bridges... The mayor said he would propose measures to reduce idling for taxis and limousines and push to eliminate the city sales tax on hybrid vehicles. He also said his plan calls for cutting down off-the-road transportation from construction equipment and ferries. Bloomberg said he plans to work with both the Port Authority and the airlines to reduce wasted fuel, which will cut down pollution generated by planes and vehicles at the borough's two airports... The plan also would promote cycling by completing the city's 1,800-mile Bike Master Plan and stepping up traffic enforcement by adding more traffic officers, who would be empowered to hand out tickets for blocking the box at intersections...
