Look at this way: For every rider lost we gain a pothole

Hamilton,Ontario,Canada -The Hamilton Spectator, by Francis Kerr Young -Apr 27, 2007: --
The fundamental idea of a transit system is to get traffic off city streets as much as possible. It would be nice if the Hamilton Street Railway was profitable or at least broke even, but that is unlikely to happen because the problem is being approached from the wrong direction... The issue of increased fares on our public transit system has reared its ugly head again. Outcries correctly state that our grasping city hall is reaching into the pockets of the needy, the elderly, and the disabled, instead of examining the problem in depth... For instance, HSR officials had estimated (under the first proposed fare increases) that the company would save about $1 million for 550,000 lost riders... As an outsider looking in, it is difficult to know all the answers but some of the aforementioned ideas are valid -- but only if bus fares are reduced. Our city council must not look at our public transit system as a separate entity but as an ongoing integral component of the preventive maintenance program to keep our streets safe by staying in good repair...
