Transport Study * Australia - More time spent in our cars but not moving

NSW,Australia -Australasian Bus News -9 April 2007: -- Recent research shows that up to 40 percent of Sydney drivers sitting in traffic during peak hour are on trips that could be made at any time of day, such as shopping or non-time critical tasks... An analysis by the NSW Transport and Population Data Centre studied Sydney's peak hour car habits and found congestion could be reduced by encouraging people to drive at other times... The Centre found peak periods had increased from 8am to 9am to 7.30am to 9.30am, and from 3pm to 6pm to 2.30pm to 7pm in the last 24 years... Not all drivers at those times were making essential trips, such as getting to work. Almost one in five trips in the morning peak were for non-essential activities. Many of those were made by retirees, the unemployed or housewives...
