PRIVATIZATION * UK - All change on the buses in new plan
Doncaster,England,UK -The Doncaster Today -8 Dec 2006: -- Doncaster could become the first town in England to get a London-style bus network as part of ambitious proposals to shake-up the public transport system... Transport chiefs will be meeting later today to discuss introducing a franchised system of bus operation, known in the industry as Quality Contracts, which means private companies have to compete for the right to run services for a specific period of time... He said the current de-regulated system - where bus companies are free to operate the services they want, on the routes they want, and can charge what they want - had not delivered for passengers... He said that under the new arrangements, the public sector could set out the quality standards required of the bus operator within the contract, and the operator would be held accountable if they failed to meet such standards...
