Sydney,New South Wales,Australia -Sydney Morning Herald, by Jordan Baker -Nov 2, 2006: -- They are salespeople, information bureaus and navigators all in one, but next time you catch a bus, spare a thought for the multi-tasking driver - the daily juggling act can take its toll... A study into fatigue among bus driver finds the added jobs, such as having to sell tickets and keep an eye out for fare evaders while battling traffic, can leave them stressed and tired... Drivers' exhaustion was worst when management did not support them or their schedules were too tight... Herbert Biggs, from the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety, in Brisbane, said there was plenty of research into fatigue among long-haul truckies, but little about city bus drivers... The divisional secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, Raul Baonza, said Dr Biggs's findings rang true - especially unrealistic schedules. "Most drivers find [keeping to a timetable] very stressful"...
