'Sick' buses - India - Add to commuters' woes
Chennai,India -News Today (India), by M BHARAT KUMAR -Oct 5, 2006: -- It's not just the bad roads and traffic snarls that Chennaiittes have to contend with. The frequent breakdown of MTC buses especially during peak hours is also posing a serious problem to those dependent on the public transport. Office-goers and school children are the worst-hit... On an average, at least a couple of buses carrying several hundreds of passengers get struck on roads like the GST Road or Anna Salai, where traffic is always at its peak. The commuters, stranded on the road, find it difficult to catch an alternative mode of transport... Recalling Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's announcement in the State Budget recently that old buses would be replaced by new ones, an official said, "buses are being built at the central workshop in Chromepet, which would roll out soon. They would replace the old ones running in several prominent routes in the city"...
