Sydney,Australia -Australasian Bus & Coach -21 July 2006: -- NSW Transport Minister John Watkins called for federal funding to help deliver "clean, safe and attractive public transport". In reply, a spokeswoman for Federal Transport Minister Warren Truss has categorically ruled out any federal funding participation in public transport suggesting the states have billions of dollars in GST revenue for public transport... The Bus Industry Confederation and the International Association of Public Transport agree that the federal government should not provide funding for public transport services; this is a state government responsibility... There is a need however, to make public transport part of a broader national passenger transport strategy, a viable alternative to the motor car to promote sustainability, economic growth, liveable cities, regional connectivity, environmental, health and safety benefits by all levels of Government and the community... The current problems of congestion, pollution and declining health in Australian cities are exacerbated by excessive car use. Increased patronage of public transport systems is one of the key solutions to these problems...
