Tasmania,Australia -The Mercury, by ANNE MATHER -1 July 2006: -- TASMANIA'S ageing school bus fleet is set for an overhaul to ensure children enjoy a safer ride... The average age of vehicles in Tasmania's school bus fleet is 25 years, but a new funding model announced yesterday aims to encourage modernisation... Infrastructure Minister Jim Cox announced a new regime for allocating State Government payments to bus operators... Under the new system, more capital payments are allocated to operators with younger fleets... Cox said the aim of the new Bus Cost Model, which would come into effect in July next year, was to induce operators to invest in better quality buses... The new model has been formed in consultation with the Tasmanian Bus Association. Association general manager Geoff Lewis said the new regime would offer a strong incentive to upgrade buses...
