Major problem for childrens - USA - A serious threat on school buses
Lompoc,CA,USA -Lompoc Record -30 June 206: -- Secondhand smoke of another kind also has become a major problem for America's children... A report last month from the Union of Concerned Scientists indicates the majority of the nation's more than half-million public school buses pose health risks to child passengers breathing trapped fumes and soot from aging diesel engines... About a third of the nation's school buses are more than a decade old, and about 95 percent are powered by diesel engines. The scientists' group points to studies indicating an aging, diesel-powered school bus can produce up to 10 times more tailpipe pollution than a big-rig truck... Children breathing such fumes are at far greater risk of developing asthma, cancer and other life-threatening afflictions... It must be a federal effort. The Environmental Protection Agency has earmarked $6 million for school bus cleanup this year - a tiny fraction of what's needed...
