Hybrid Buses - USA - Coming for Rochester
Rochester,NY,USA -WXXI, by Walt Gabalski -19 July 2006: -- Public transportation authorities in New York are increasingly turning to hybrid diesel-electric buses to cut costs amidst rising fuel prices... The Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority expects to launch 19 hybrid diesel-electric buses next May. The buses were ordered from Gillig Corporation of San Francisco, California this spring... They use stored elecricity to reduce the need for diesel fuel... The purchase price of hybrid buses is 50-percent higher than traditional diesel buses, but fuel savings with the new buses is expected to be 30 to 60-percent... If the RGRTA realizes the kind of savings it anticipates from the hybrid buses, Aesch predicts a gradual conversion of the overall fleet...
