Hybrid -USA - New York's New Buses

One bus can't do this on its own, but a fleet of 825 hybrid buses headed for use on New York City streets provide the same clear-air benefits as the same amount of hybrid passenger cars... Another reason for enthusiasm is that the buses improve fuel economy by 1 mile per gallon, which is a big deal when traditional transit buses get 2.5 mpg... The technology doesn't come cheap. The Orion VII hybrid bus (DaimlerChrysler's) costs about 30 percent more than a diesel-powered transit bus, but much of the cost differential will be recaptured over the decade or more the bus is in service: less fuel consumed, no transmissions to overhaul, and fewer brake pads to replace...
