Unsafe Bus Operators * USA - Change Names, Keep Trucking

Bus operators which federal authorities have ordered to stop operating because of serious safety violations appear to be frequently "reincarnating" by changing their names and continuing to operate...

Chicago,ILL,USA -The Two Way, by Frank James -30 July 2009: ... endangering other travelers on the nation's highways... That's the conclusion of a Government Accountability Office report which found that many of these operators were so brazen, and federal oversight so lax, they didn't even bother to change their business addresses or phone numbers when they submitted new paperwork to the federal agency that oversees them, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration... The report acknowledges that ever since that accident, FMCSA has done more to try and catch these reincarnated bus operators using computer matching to find suspects... But still some operators fell through the cracks despite the agency's new efforts. Another excerpt from the report: "...We found two cases where FMCSA did not identify new motor coach carriers as reincarnations of companies it had ordered out of service and after the (new Passenger Carrier Vetting Process or PCVP) went into effect."... DANGEROUS COMPANY * India - Violence in Delhi as Blueline bus kills seven

New Delhi,India -Indo Asian News Service/The Hindustan Times -October 07, 2007: -- A speeding Blueline bus mowed down seven people in New Delhi on Sunday in the worst such disaster blamed on the "killer" fleet, sparking mob fury that halted all traffic on the highway to Agra and forced the police to fire tear gas. The dead included five women, a child and a man... Eight others, including some who were crossing the road, were injured when the bus ran into a crowd while trying to overtake a stationary Delhi Transport Corp (DTC) bus from the wrong side at Aali Goan, near Badarpur... * Delhi Govt announces compensation for Blueline victims
New Delhi,India -Press Trust Of India/The Hindustan Times -October 11, 2007: -- Delhi government on Sunday announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the next of the kin of those mowed down by a speeding Blueline bus in the Capital... Announcing the compensation for families of seven persons killed in the accident, Transport Minister Harun Yusuf said those injured will be provided free treatment...

* Delhi Govt to phase out Blueline buses by Nov 15
New Delhi,India -Press Trust Of India/The Hindustan Times -October 11, 2007: -- The Delhi government on Thursday informed the High Court that it will place before it the scheme for phasing out Blueline buses from the city roads by November 15... Appearing for the city government, Counsel Mukta Gupta admitted before the bench of Justices Mukul Mudgal and Reva Khetrapal that about 826 buses were running with tempered speed governors between the period from January 1 to October 9 this year... She also admitted that the government has challaned nine buses for over-speeding and 25 drivers were prosecuted for drunken driving...

Dangerous Companys * Belgium - Forget the night, say bus drivers

Brussels,Belgium -expatica -30 Jan 2007: -- Just days after the accident that claimed the lives ofseveral Belgian nationals in Germany, bus drivers, backed by their employers, expressed their disapproval of night shifts... "All serious accidents take place at night", said Guy Van Hyfte, busdriver and labour union member... Furthermore, many companies do not respect the legislation limiting driving time. Passengers' testimonials collected by the Belgian media group Corelio, show that drivers often drive too much without taking sufficient rest. Plus, the co-driver does not always rest while their colleague takes the wheel... Yves Mannaerts, the director of the Fédération belge des entreprises d'autobus - a federation representing bus companies, said that such behaviour is against the law, and that bus drivers should rest, even if the sleeping conditions are less then optimal, in the narrow cabin located next to the engine where drivers are expected to rest...
