* UK - BUS AD: HEY... minimum: ... leave the phone in the advertising !!!
* UK - The best responses to that ‘offensive’ ‘ride me all day for £3′ bus ad
(Picture: NAT/Facebook - This New Adventure Travel campaign was called ‘sexist’ and ‘offensive’ online)
-- Following a huge backlash online, New Adventure Travel, a private bus company in the Cardiff Bay area is removing adverts from its buses that feature a topless woman holding a sign which reads ‘Ride me all day for £3’ ... After a barrage of criticism from locals, the company yesterday apologised ‘unreservedly’ for what they had intended to be a ‘tongue in cheek’ campaign to attract the younger generation... They said all ads, some of which also featured a topless man, would be removed from buses within 24 hours... However, that still allowed plenty of time for Twitter to have its say and, of course, Twitter had a lot to say...

ADS on BUSES * USA - N.J. Legislature considers allowing ones on school buses
Trenton,NJ,USA -The Associated Press/New Jersey Real-Time News -October 10, 2010: -- New Jersey's cash-strapped public school districts are one step closer to being able to raise money by soliciting school bus advertising... The measure, approved late last month in the Assembly, would allow ads on the outside of buses that districts own or lease... The bill requires boards of education to use half the revenue the ads generate to defray fuel costs for student busing. The other half could go toward school programs or services the individual districts deem appropriate... The legislation now heads to the Senate... ADS or NOT * USA - Could School Bus Ads Save School Budgets?
The wheels on the bus go buy, buy, buy: Could school bus ads be the answer to budget woes?
Seattle,WASH,USA -The Associated Press, by DONNA GORDON BLANKINSHIP -March 19, 2010: -- School districts have imposed all sorts of drastic cuts to save money during the down economy, canceling field trips and making parents pay for everything from tissues to sports transportation... And some have now resorted to placing advertisements on school buses... School districts say it's practically free money, and advertisers love the captive audience that school buses provide... That's the problem, say opponents: Children are being forced to travel to school on moving media kiosks, and the tactic isn't much different than dressing teachers in sponsor-emblazoned uniforms... (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski. Advertising on Buses * Philippines - Limit pol ads on buses to 2 x 3 feet
Manila,Philippines -ABS/CBN News -19 Feb 2010: -- Political advertisements on private cars and public utility buses are not against the law, but they should not obstruct the driver's view, according to a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official... Expressing his personal opinion, Comelec Commissioner, Nicodemo Ferrer, said stickers and other election propaganda on private cars and those often found at the back of buses are not against the Fair Election Act... Ferrer said the Comelec will be drafting guidelines with respect to the size of the ads on public utility buses... He suggested that images on the back or sides of public utility buses should not be bigger than 2 feet by 3 feet... Ferrer said this is to prevent abuse of the provisions on the Fair Election Act concerning the size of propaganda materials... What is important, he said, is that the images posted on vehicles should not obstruct the view of the driver... (Photo from 3.bp: Jeepney bus)* Despite Comelec’s warning, posters are still on buses, trees
Manila,Philippines -GMANews.TV, by LBG -20 Feb 2010: -- Despite the Commission on Elections' repeated warnings, posters and campaign materials of candidates in the May elections are still being plastered on buses and trees... The Comelec had declared as illegal large campaign materials on public utility buses and other public passenger vehicles... But the poll body said those on private vehicles are not covered by the poster ban because owners have the right to promote freely their candidates... Labels: advertising on buses
Bus Ads * USA - Are a bad idea
Jordan,NY,USA -Deseret News -Feb. 18, 2010: -- We feel the pain of the Jordan School District. Being cash-strapped with kids to teach is distressing. But the plan to post advertisements on school buses (put forward by Rep. Jim Bird of West Jordan) feels more than a little ill-advised and desperate... The ads would bring in revenue for struggling school districts. They would also create a very cozy relationship between the state school system and certain businesses. It's one thing for schools to partner with businesses for education purposes. That can be constructive and helpful. But it's quite another for schools to sell prominent space to promote specific products, especially on vehicles such as bright yellow school buses, which the public has come to regard as iconic... The door would be open to unhealthy relationships of influence between deep-pocketed companies and schools. Each ad could be seen as an endorsement from the public school system. Few products would qualify for that kind of relationship... (Deseret News archives - Legislation put forward by Rep. Jim Bird of West Jordan would turn Utah's yellow school buses into rolling advertisements)Labels: advertising on buses
Advertising Market * USA - Transit Authority Feeling the Pain From a Crippled One
Citing a sharp drop in sales and rates, a company that sells many of the ads on New York buses and trains is behind on payments
New York,NY,USA -The New York Times, by Yana Paskova May 24, 2009: ... The worst advertising market in decades has had a devastating, and well-documented, effect on newspapers, magazines and television networks. But now another recipient of ad dollars is being hurt by the market slump at a time it can little afford it: mass transit... In recent months, a company that sells many of the ads that appear on buses and trains and in stations in New York, Boston, Minneapolis and other cities has come up short in its payments to transit agencies, citing a sharp drop in ad rates and sales... New York is among the hardest hit... The company, Titan Worldwide, fell short a total of $7.5 million in mandatory payments to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from February through April, citing lower than expected ad sales. That would be enough to buy 16 new buses for the authority, which recently received a state bailout in the face of multibillion-dollar budget deficits over the next few years... * Vietnam - Bus ads halted
The city People's Committee announced last Friday it was putting on hold a plan to allow buses to carry advertisements, citing weaknesses in the system, including poor oversight of advertising activity in the city
Hanoi,Vietnam -The VietNamBrigde -7 Dec 2008: -- The committee said in a statement that advertising content had often infringed on traditions and customs and that the contents to be permitted on buses had yet to be decided... It advised concerned agencies to carry out further studies to make the plan feasible... An estimated VND100 billion (US$6.25 million) will be collected annually if buses are allowed to carry ads, given the city has a fleet of nearly 3,200 vehicles... There has been a ban on such advertising since 2002 on safety and aesthetic grounds... * Errant Ho Chi Minh City buses irk officials
Ho Chi Minh,Viet -Thanh Nien News -December 10, 2008: -- An explosion of unlicensed buses and routes in Ho Chi Minh City is confounding passengers and authorities alike as the end of the year approaches... There are often more than 10 buses parked outside Suoi Tien theme park in the city’s District 9 as the drivers and assistants solicit passengers... Passengers are hustled into buses, no matter where they say they want to go... These unlicensed buses are bound for central and northern regions, even though Suoi Tien bus station is only authorized for public buses traveling to localities in HCMC and neighboring Dong Nai and Binh Duong provinces... Several of the unauthorized buses do not have any markings to indicate the company name, departure time or destination... ADS ON BUSES * WORLDWIDE
* Australia - Sprouting messages of reason everywhere…except AustraliaThe Atheist Foundation of Australia sought to emulate those successes, and met an obstacle: the ad company simply refused to allow them to buy ad space, without giving a reason, and you can tell it was simply religious bigotry behind the decision
USA -ScienceBlogs, by PZ Myers (*) -November 26, 2008: -- Bold atheists have been buying ad space on buses in London and Washington DC—it's been a successful tactic for raising the profile of godless groups, and has also been somewhat controversial... It's not as if they were trying to put up abusive or profane messages. Here are some of the slogans they suggested... We started off with "Atheism - because there is no credible evidence", we put that to the bus companies, they didn't like that and they said the wording wasn't to their acceptance. And then we changed that to "Celebrate reason" and thought we'd make it a bit comical "Sleep in on Sunday mornings", but they refused that also... This refusal is coming from the same company, APN Outdoor, that previously ran Bible verses on buses — it's clearly simple bias that is behind their decision. I hope someone is considering legal action, since this kind of asymmetry that closes channels of communication to one side of a public issue means the ad company is arbitrarily imposing their faith-based beliefs on others... (* PZ Myers is a biologist and associate professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris)* USA - South Florida: Learn about Islam, ads on buses urge
FL,USA -The Sun Sentinel -November 26, 2008: -- South Florida Muslims launched an ad campaign Tuesday with banners on more than 120 buses urging Floridians to learn more about Islam... For eight weeks, buses in Broward and Miami-Dade counties will carry messages like "Islam: Got Questions? Get answers"... Ads include a Web site address and telephone number where people can get accurate and objective information about Islam, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which organized the project... The council says the $60,000 campaign comes in response to the widespread distribution in September of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West, a controversial film about a small number of radical Muslim terrorists...Labels: advertising on buses
BUSES' ADS * UK - 'No God' slogans for city's buses
London,UK -BBC News -21 Oct 2008: -- Bendy-buses with the slogan "There's probably no God" could soon be running on the streets of London... The atheist posters are the idea of the British Humanist Association (BHA) and have been supported by prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins... The BHA planned only to raise £5,500, which was to be matched by Professor Dawkins, but it has now raised more than £36,000 of its own accord... It aims to have two sets of 30 buses carrying the signs for four weeks.. (Picture: The posters could run from January)Labels: advertising on buses
