The students at Michigan Technical Academy are taking used cooking oil from a nearby tortilla factory and converting it to biodiesel, using a converted water heater and a pump jury-rigged from used boat and car parts to power two school buses -- at a cost of 80 cents a gallon...
The pilot models are just the kind of synergy Gov. Jennifer Granholm has touted to jump-start the state's economy, combining the efforts of a business and a school to train students in a high-tech industry -- while making clean energy to boot... And it's attracted attention from officials like Wayne County Executive Robert, who spoke to the students Friday when they demonstrated their fuel-making activities at the academy... The Lane Transit District has jumped on the biodiesel bandwagonEugene,OR,USA -The Register-Guard, by Jeff Wright -June 16, 2007: -- In a test run, the transit district has begun adding a 5 percent blend of plant-based biodiesel to its low-sulfur diesel in 10 of its older buses... If no major problems surface, LTD hopes to increase the biodiesel blend incrementally to 20 percent for its entire 110-bus fleet, spokesman Andy Vobora said... LTD is joining other transit districts and commercial fleets that have already experimented with biodiesel blends, Vobora said. Portland's TriMet bus system, for example, uses a 5 percent blend in all its buses and, closer to home, Sanipac uses a 20 percent blend in all its diesel-fueled vehicles... Increased demand for biodiesel has resulted in a more reliable supply, and at lower costs that are more competitive with regular diesel, Vobora said...Labels: Biodiesel blend

Stockman -Feb. 07, 2007: -- Exactly what caused the problems that plagued area school buses this week is still somewhat of a mystery, but school officials are confident the buses will run fine today... Fort Wayne Community Schools and East Allen County Schools canceled school Tuesday after fuel turned to gel and shut down dozens of buses Monday. Mechanics worked feverishly to determine why the subzero temperatures had such an effect on the fuel, a problem not previously seen. About a quarter of each district’s buses ran into problems... Both districts use a 20 percent biodiesel blend in their fleets but are returning to their traditional winter diesel blends to get through the cold days ahead...
