BIODIESEL * USA - Students' energy drives buses
Pupils at technology school transform cooking oil to biodiesel at 80 cents a gallon
Redford Topwnship,MICH,USA -The Detroit NewsKaren Bouffard-September 15, 2008: -- Students at a township charter school believe they're doing their part to crack the energy crisis... The students at Michigan Technical Academy are taking used cooking oil from a nearby tortilla factory and converting it to biodiesel, using a converted water heater and a pump jury-rigged from used boat and car parts to power two school buses -- at a cost of 80 cents a gallon...
The pilot models are just the kind of synergy Gov. Jennifer Granholm has touted to jump-start the state's economy, combining the efforts of a business and a school to train students in a high-tech industry -- while making clean energy to boot... And it's attracted attention from officials like Wayne County Executive Robert, who spoke to the students Friday when they demonstrated their fuel-making activities at the academy...
