Salt Lake City,UH,USA -The Salt Lake Tribune, by Lee Davidson -Jun 05 2014: -- CATO Institute says UTA, others opt for pricey rail projects to be seen as ‘world-class’ ... A national research group is pointing to the Utah Transit Authority’s TRAX lines as an example of big spending for mediocre results and argues investing in better bus systems would have been cheaper and more effective... A policy report by the libertartian-leaning Cato Institute is out that criticizes Utah and other areas that build transit systems with rail rather than relying on cheaper, more flexible buses. Defenders of rail say a mix of light-rail, commuter rail and buses create the most effective systems... It was December 2011 when Federal Transit Administrator, Peter M. Rogoff, signed a document granting the funding to pay for the Draper TRAX extension... The Utah Transit Authority's light-rail TRAX system has expanded dramatically in recent years... The UTA disagrees with his assessment...
