COACH OPERATOR NEWS * UK - National Express upbeat on coach travel
Birmingham,UK -Yahoo Finance, by Gill Plimmer -24 February 2011: -- National Express, the multinational transport operator, says its coaches business is likely to win market share from rail as cash-strapped consumers seek cheaper means of travel... With train fares rising sharply, the company said it planned to expand its coach business, which accounts for 44 per cent of total operating profits... National Express, the biggest private coach operator in the UK and Spain, said it hoped to take advantage of the deregulation of the long-distance bus market in continental Europe, potentially using its Eurolines service, in which it is a majority shareholder... Fares may rise on its UK coaches and buses, however, as the company looks to offset a 20 per cent cut in government fuel grants in 2012, which will cost it £10m ($16m) a year. It said it was keen to improve yield rather than cut services but pointed out that the economic environment could make it difficult to pass on increases fully... It said it was well hedged to deal with rising fuel price...
