* UK - Volvo Trucks (and buses) built at Irvine

(Video from YouTube, by epmallon —February 28, 2008: Volvo truck and bus plant in Irvine Scotland closed its doors in june 2000. Although it was a profit making plant they decided to close it and move production to Poland...)

Irvine,Scotland,UK -BigLorryBlog (UK), by 'Two-Stroke' -March 25, 2010: -- I am grateful to 'Two-Stroke' for tipping Biglorryblog off to the fact that this excellent 10-minute film on the sadly no-more Irvine truck and bus plant in Scotland is on YouTube. The plant ultimately closed in 2000 after Volvo decided to shift much of the bus production to a new plant in Poland which I have a feeling doesn't exist now. Thus the world of commercial vehicle globalisation... In addition to building regular FL, and F truck models the guys in the plant were experts at 'specials' like the narrow-cab CH range for Switzerland as well as military models like the Highlander... Meanwhile I'm grateful to whoever posted this up on YouTube as it provided some fond memories for me of the plant and the people who worked there and made it the legend it still is... (TWN's Note: ... And we agree...)

The company currently operates a fleet of 1,679 hybrid buses, of which 1,675 are Orion VII diesel-electric hybrids from DBNA. Orion began developing and producing hybrid buses in the mid-1990s and formed a partnership with NYCT to help test the buses during their development phase. DBNA then delivered its first Orion diesel-electric hybrid bus to New York City in 1998. Although the Orion hybrid bus is used all across North America...

* Germany - Mercedes CapaCity bus

Sttugart,Germany -NZ in Transit -25 March 2010: -- Light rail holds top glamour space in the public mind, but bus technology is moving rapidly ahead as well. A fleet of these beautiful buses carry over 530,000 passengers a day on the Istanbul Bus Rapid Transit corridor. The rear section wheels steer in concert with the front steering, and vehicle has computerized stabilizers. When Mercedes showcased these in Germany they deliberately chose cities that had tight, winding, narrow streets to demonstrate the ease of cornering and working heavy traffic. With four axles to spread the load each bus can carry up to 193 passengers, as with trams in situations where a large proportion of passengers are standing is the norm...
