STRIKE & PROTESTS WORLDWIDE * South Africa - Violent Taxi Strike Fails to Halt Rea Vaya

Johannesburg,SA -All Africa, by Artwell Dlamini and Luphert Chilwane -16 March 2010: -- The City of Johannesburg said yesterday it was pressing ahead with the implementation of the next phase of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system despite the substantial taxi strike that brought the country's economic hub to a standstill... The violent strike - marked by shootings, burning of tyres and stoning of buses - entered its second day yesterday... It came as the city prepared to roll out the complementary and feeder routes system yesterday, another key phase of the Rea Vaya project. This service, which was to be launched on March 1, was delayed for two weeks because of a standoff between the city and some taxi operators... South African Police Service spokesman Supt Lungelo Dlamini said 10 taxi drivers were arrested yesterday after bus depots were barricaded, tyres burnt and Putco buses stoned... * Pakistan - Six buses burnt, 16 damaged in Lahore protest

Lahore,Pakistan -Pakistan Defence - 16 March 2010: -- Transport owners and students set on fire six buses, damaged 16 others and blocked the Ferozepur Road for over four hours during a protest against the increase in fares and impounding of Lahore-Kasur route vehicles by the Lahore Transport Company LTC) staff... Traffic remained suspended for hours amid thick smoke cloud as the protesters turned violent against police... The protesters alleged that the LTC was intentionally sabotaging their operation by impounding and challaning their vehicles without any major offence. They said the LTC was trying to pave the way for their own buses on the same route for which they intended to receive hefty amounts as commission... The police arrived on the spot and tried to stop the protesters, but they were greeted with stones by the protesters. Within 40 minutes, the protesters burnt six buses, five of them belonged to the Premier Bus Service and one to the Bandial Bus Service... (Picture from nimg.sulekha.com: Pakistan burned bus)
