TRANSPORT COSTS * USA - MTA bailout is called no help to Long Island Bus quandary
Nassau County,Long Island,USA -Newsday, by Alfonso Castillo -May 6, 2009: -- While Albany's bailout of the MTA may have saved most transit riders from massive fare hikes and deep service cuts, it did nothing to resolve the larger funding crisis faced by Long Island Bus, several transit advocates said Wednesday... While technically owned by Nassau County, Long Island Bus is maintained and operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority... The peculiar arrangement has created years of disputes over who is responsible for funding the system, which transported a record 32.6 million passengers in 2008... For years, the MTA has looked to the county for increased funding, but the county has refused to contribute more than $10.5 million annually - a small fraction of Long Island Bus' annual budget, which is $132 million this year... Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, has said it makes "absolutely no sense" for the county to fund the bus system with property tax dollars, and has urged the MTA to take over full control of Long Island Bus...
