Chaos on the tracks * Australia - A boon for buses

"Melbourne needs more bus routes like this, but running until midnight, seven days a week"

Melbourne,Australia -The Age, by Clay Lucas -March 30, 2009: -- While an avalanche of bad news over cancellations and overcrowding has befallen Melbourne's train and tram systems in the past year, buses have been the city's quiet achievers... Last year, there were 98 million trips on Melbourne's buses — 13.1 per cent more than the year before — with little of the unreliability and overcrowding on rail-based services... And no route has been more successful than the number 401 bus from North Melbourne train station to Melbourne University... It now carries 3000 passengers a day, departing every three minutes during morning and afternoon peaks... Public Transport Minister, Lynne Kosky, is proud of the new bus route's popularity... Ms Kosky said the bus had been "a runaway success", because it gave people commuting from Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo and from Melbourne's north-west a quicker service... The Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said: "Melbourne needs more bus routes like this, but running until midnight, seven days a week."...
