Diesel-electric vehicles will reduce pollution while doubling fuel mileage
Winston-Salem,NC,USA -The Winston-Salem Journal, by Paul Garber -March 1, 2009: -- The Winston-Salem Transit Authority is buying 10 new diesel-electric buses, the first step in a plan to replace its fleet of 52 with the more energy-efficient hybrids... It will take several years to overhaul the entire fleet, WSTA director Art Barnes said. The federal government will help pay for buses after they've been on the road for 12 years, Barnes said. The last time the city bought buses was in 2001... The buses are made by Gillig, a California manufacturer, and use a transmission made by GM-Allison. The battery is on the top rear of the bus connected by wires to the engine below...
