CUTING BUSES' COSTS * USA

* Orange County to cut more bus services

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Los Angeles Times, by Tami Abdollah -March 10, 2009: -- About 7% of the county's annual bus-service hours will be cut. The eliminations are in addition to a January fare increase aimed at generating an additional $3 million annually... Even as their colleagues in Los Angeles County forge ahead with plans to add services despite a projected $2-billion operating deficit over the next decade, Orange County transit officials Monday announced another -- and probably not the last -- cut to bus service to offset a $36-million shortfall... The cut, which will be the third in seven months, is in addition to a January fare increase aimed at generating an additional $3 million annually... (Photo by Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times - As the Orange County Transportation Authority cuts bus services, passengers can expect to wait longer for buses on routes that have been shortened and now have fewer stops)

* Metro Bus to eliminate about 900 trips a week - No routes will be eliminated

Buffalo,NY,USA -The Buffalo News, by Sharon Linstedt -10 March 2009: -- Metro Buses will soon be logging nearly 900 fewer trips per week... As part of its ongoing effort to cut costs and avoid the need for another fare increase, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will reduce bus runs on 38 of its 67 routes as of March 22... No routes will be eliminated... The service modifications will save the authority about $1.6 million and reduce total runs by 4 percent. The NFTA, which currently offers 19,500 bus runs per week, estimates the service modifications will directly impact one percent of weekday riders, and two percent of weekend passengers... * State budget deal cuts bus funding

Chico,CAL,USA -Enterprise-Record/MSNBC, by Steve Schoonover -March 10, 2009: -- The state's new budget includes a big funding cut for transit systems, and Butte County's bus line is no exception... The state is eliminating what's called State Transit Assistance for the next five years, and even cutting the current year's allotment in half... For Butte Regional Transit, that means $818,000 included in this year's budget suddenly turned into $409,000, about eight months into the fiscal year... But ... Ivan Garcia of the Butte County Association of Governments said, the B-Line has been fortunate to have other sources of funding made available to replace older buses. With $2.6 million incoming via the federal stimulus package, six more natural gas-powered buses are to be bought, which should complete the modernization of the fleet... * Santa Cruz County bus ridership jumps, money does not

Santa Cruz,CAL,USA -The Mercury News, by Genevieve Bookwalter - 10 March 2009: -- Ridership is up significantly on Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District buses. But there may be fewer buses to ride, as the state slashes almost $50 million in funding over the next five years... That's unwelcome news for the strapped transit agency, which in the past five years has dealt with multimillion-dollar deficits, a drivers' strike, extremely high fuel costs and other issues... While ridership escalates, the state has frozen all public transit money for the next five years to balance its ballooning budget deficit in the midst of an economic recession. That could cost Metro $46.6 million in money marked for natural gas buses, a new operations building and bus shelter improvements, among other projects... * Miami-Dade bus system gets reprieve, but road looks rocky

Miami,FL,USA -The Miami Herald, by ALFONSO CHARDY -11 March 2009: -- The county had planned bus service cuts and driver layoffs -- but struck them from the agenda a day before a meeting... Like many of the almost 400,000 Miami-Dade transit riders, Isaguires depends on the buses for everything from getting to and from work to picking up groceries... But a tentative proposal to target 13 routes for cuts or reductions, among them Route 36, would create havoc for Isaguires, forcing her to walk the 13-block stretch between 23rd and 36th Streets... According to a proposal floated by Miami-Dade County Manager, George M. Burgess, in an eight-page memo, bus service would be reduced from 32.6 million to 30.5 million ''revenue miles'' and those reductions would require layoffs and bus route reductions and modifications... (One comment about: Issues wrote on 03/11/2009 10:56:02 AM: Why doesn't the County convert to Bio-Fuels and save over .50 cents a gallon? That alone will more than make up for the cost! Also, aside from the 1/2 cent they also increased fares by .50 cents! If they incorporate a system to accept debit cards and credit cards that will help too! Market services to tourists is another bold step! Come on County Employees wake up smell the roses things are changing all around you WAKE UP ! HELLO MAYOR ARE YOU ALSO ASLEEP?)... (Photo by NISSA BENJAMIN / MIAMI HERALD STAFF - Kaylyn Isaguires, 4, and her mother, Karla, ride Route 36 everyday to go to school. Miami-Dade transit changes would force them to walk 13 blocks to a bus stop)

* Greeley bus system may shut down in 2010 without more funding

Greeley,CO,USA -The Greeley Tribune, by Andrew Villegas -11 March 2009: -- Greeley’s bus system, without changes to current funding methods, will likely be discontinued in 2012... That’s what city staff told the Greeley City Council Tuesday night during a council work session that was attended by more than 60 people, many disabled, who came to hear about transit... The bus system could face impending doom thanks to Greeley’s likely inclusion in a federal Transportation Management Area that currently includes only Loveland, Berthoud and Fort Collins. Through conversations with federal authorities, Greeley staff has come to the conclusion that it will likely be included in the TMA after the 2010 Census and as soon as October 2011, though it’s more likely to be included in October 2012...
