London,UK -Transport Briefing -9 Feb 2009: -- Today (9 February) under a wave of reforms triggered by the Local Transport Act 2008, England's six metropolitian passenger transport authorities become Integrated Transport Authorities ... As well as a change of name for the transport policy bodies in Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands and West Yorkshire, the creation of ITAs will see them taking on a wider transport remit as part of the government's attempt to give greater powers for delivering transport improvements to the England city regions outside London... ITAs can take responsibility for city region-wide Local Transport Plans and gain the same 'well-being' powers as local authorities, giving them more legal leeway to implement policies which contribute to the areas the serve... City regions can also begin a formal review process of the role of their ITAs which, subject to approval by the Secretary of State for Transport... All six PTA/ITAs have already begun informal reviews...
