CROWDED BUSES * Vietnam - No room to improve services

The capital’s bus service is struggling to carry an ever-rising number of passengers. More buses would just make traffic jams worse

Ha Noi,Vietnam -Vietnam News -6 Dec 2008: -- ... "Each bus is on the road for 18 hours every day but we can guarantee satisfactory service for only 13 of them," says Ha Noi Transport Service Corporation (Transerco) deputy director Nguyen Trong Thong. "A 60-seat bus usually carries about 120 passengers to meet the peak-hour rush and this annoys both passengers and the company," he says... Transerco’s passenger numbers reached 280 million for the year, an increase of 20 per cent against 2007, with the expansion of Ha Noi in August... The buses now make 10,500 journeys each day, 18 per cent more than last year, says the deputy director... The number of journeys on the most popular and longest routes of Transerco’s 60 routes, Ha Dong-My Dinh, Bac Co-Ha Dong-Ba La and Tran Khanh Du-Ha Dong, have been increased by 38 per cent... Still the supply of public transport does not meet demand... And the company has not been allowed to increase its number of vehicles because Ha Noi’s roads cannot accommodate them...
