ACCIDENTS * UK - Translink buses have 4 crashes every day
Belfast,N. Ireland,UK -Irish News On Line, by Maeve Connolly -6 Dec 2008: -- Translink buses are involved in an average of four accidents every day and more than 45 collisions involving pedestrians every year... Figures for the past five years show that buses were involved in more than 7,000 collisions during that period – 226 with pedestrians – and the company has paid out £1.5 million in compensation... The figures were made public by the Department for Regional Development following an assembly question by the SDLP assembly member Thomas Burns. They were revealed weeks after a west Belfast teenager was killed in an accident in Belfast city centre. Ciara Park (16) died in hospital shortly after being struck by a bus on Royal Avenue on November 11... Regional development minister Conor Murphy said 97 per cent of the 7,192 accidents recorded were collisions with other vehicles and that Translink had been held liable for less than half of this total...
