The wheels on the bus * USA - City goes round and round on idea of public transit system
Manhattan,KS,USA -The Manhattan Mercury, by Bill Felber -11 Sept 2008: -- City officials agreed on some preliminary steps Tuesday that could lead to the eventual transformation of the ATA bus service into a scheduled mass transportation agency... At a work session Tuesday afternoon, commissioners agreed to begin the process of seeking state and federal funds for such an expansion. Anne Smith, director of the bus service, invited that pursuit, saying ATA bus was ready and willing to fill a broader transportation role... The system began years ago as a service for the aging and infirm, providing scheduled pickups and deliveries for those who could not drive. In recent years, however, it has expanded to the point where Smith said that last year about one-quarter of its riders were from the general public...
