Chicago,ILL,USA -The Chicago Tribune, by Jon Hilkevitch & Steve Schmadeke -April 30, 2008: -- Mayor Richard Daley on Tuesday delivered a sharp kick to get rush-hour commuters out of their cars and onto buses with a plan to speed up public transportation and make it even more expensive and time-consuming to drive.Using millions of federal dollars to emulate a system the mayor saw in Brazil, the city proposes to use rewards and punishments to reduce traffic congestion and clean the air... The city plans to create bus-only lanes on four major city corridors within the next year, allowing Chicago Transit Authority buses to zip past cars that have been squeezed into fewer lanes... Routes could include Lake Shore Drive, and Ogden and Ashland Avenues... The CTA express buses, called "bus rapid transit," would make fewer stops than regular buses. When they do stop, riders would already have paid their fares at street-corner kiosks, accelerating the boarding process... The funding also will help the CTA buy long, articulated buses with hybrid engine technology.Thanks to technology, the buses would also be able to whisk through intersections by signaling traffic lights to give them longer green time... The sophisticated system giving priority to buses stuck in traffic or running behind schedule has benefited bus riders in Los Angeles and San Francisco. But the Chicago effort would be the nation's largest, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said in Chicago on Tuesday...
