Broken Buses * USA - Documents reveal disturbing failures
Anderson,IND,USA -WTHR (Indianapolis,IND) -April 29, 2008: -- School buses in the city of Anderson carry thousands of students each day, and many of them also carry a secret... Most of Anderson's school buses have been rejected by Indiana State Police for violating state standards... Bus 87, for example, failed both of its state inspections this year - once for a brake problem and once for oil leaking onto the exhaust system... And last week, the bus driver noticed another safety problem: the bus' speedometer stopped working... This school year, two out of every three Anderson school buses were rejected or ordered out of service during their state inspections... And in some Indiana school districts, the problem is even worse... Inspection reports show the "out of service" rate was 20 percent for buses in Lawrence Township, 41 percent in Turkey Run, 59-percent in Vincennes and 86 percent for Tri-Cap Head Start buses in Petersburg... * Funding Cuts Vs. Aging Buses - Ohio school districts face frustrating options
Wheeling,WV,USA -The Wheeling Intelligencer, by SHELLEY HANSON -April 30, 2008: -- Students in the Union Local School District will have to ride to and from class aboard old school buses next year... Superintendent Kirk Glasgow said his district has 14 buses on the road daily with five more that operate as spare vehicles. But he said there are times — especially during winter, when weather conditions are harsh — that all the spares are on the road while other buses are being repaired. Glasgow noted buses are taken off the road whenever there is a “real safety concern” regarding their condition, such as failing brakes or signal lights that are not operational... About 1 million Ohio students ride to school on buses... (AP Photo - Worthington Schools mechanic and technician Andy Rogers replaces an alternator on a school bus at a depot in Worthington, Ohio. State funding for school buses has been slashed dramatically, leaving school districts with an aging fleet of buses that are becoming too expensive to maintain)
