* SEStran commissions study to encourage bus patronage
Scotland,UK -Transport Briefing -8 Jan 2008: -- The South East of Scotland Transport Partnership (SEStran), the regional transport partnership for south east Scotland, has appointed engineering consultancy Atkins to develop a strategy to encourage greater use of buses by the local community, commuters and visitors in line with its Regional Transport Strategy... The four month contract was awarded to Atkins’ Transport Planning team following a competitive tendering process... SEStran is the statutory transport partnership of eight local authorities - Clackmannanshire, East Lothian, City of Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian...
* Arriva bought additional 10 pct stake in Barraqueiro
London,UK -Thomson Financial/Hemscott.com -8 Jan 2008: -- Bus and train operator Arriva said it has bought a further 10 pct stake in Portuguese transport company Barraqueiro SGPS SA for 50 mln eur in cash... The move builds on Arriva's acquisition of 21.5 pct of Barraqueiro for 60 mln eur in May 2006... Barraqueiro is the largest passenger transport operator in Portugal, with more than 4,800 employees, almost 2,200 buses, and 18 train sets... The company, which has about 20 pct of the country's bus market and is Portugal's only private passenger rail operator, had sales of 260 mln eur and operating profits of 26.6 mln eur for the year to end-December 2006...
