Surge in ridership attributed to high gas prices, better service, environmental concerns
Albany,NY,USA -The Albany Times Union, by CATHY WOODRUFF -January 2, 2008: -- ... Capital District Transportation Authority officials say Close is far from the only customer standing on popular runs in recent months, as factors including higher gas prices, more frequent runs on some routes, and heightened environmental consciousness finally seem to be drawing new riders... For the first time in 20 years, CDTA is on track to see some 13.5 million boardings on its buses during the budget year that will end on March 31... Ridership on regular route buses was up 5 percent in November from November 2006, and it's up 6 percent overall for the fiscal year... In fact, the whole bus system is seeing more extended periods of heavy use beyond traditional rush hours, as retail and restaurant employees and shift workers ride more often, he said... Meanwhile, CDTA officials say improved bus maintenance practices have helped reduce bus breakdowns. Better retention of employees also has helped reduce driver shortages...
