* Australia - Driving home bus advantages
Public transport has an image problem in Tasmania and it would take a cultural revolution to persuade many to abandon the comfort and convenience of private cars
Tasmania,Australia -The Mercury -October 02, 2007: -- In August, the latest Roy Morgan National Survey of Community Satisfaction with Policing found that Tasmanians felt less safe on public transport in the day than people interstate. The tales of violence and intimidation that emerged at the bus drivers' barbecue on Sunday would not have eased these fears. They spoke of facing frequent abuse, threats and spitting from passengers, of buses having to be cleaned of faeces or vomit up to five times a week, of children throwing rocks at windows and other incidents. Security cameras help identify offenders and provide a deterrent but are not the only answer. They are part of a wider strategy to boost safety that includes more police and security guards patrolling the buses and a code of behaviour for school students...
