Report * Japan - 86 bus fires reported in past 4 years
Osaka,Japan -The Daily Yomiuri Shimbun -17 Feb 2007: -- There were 86 fires involving commercially operated buses in the four years from 2003, due mostly to poor maintenance, according to a report by the Construction and Transport Ministry... In many cases, the fires started near the engine of the bus, and in some cases the buses were engulfed in flames after passengers were evacuated... Bus operators use a bus for an average of 15 years, and 70 percent of the buses that caught fire had been used for 10 years or more... However, 10 buses caught fire less than five years after being registered for service... "Buses are being kept in service for increasingly long periods as their performance has improved," a ministry official said. "But most of the fires could have been prevented if the buses had been properly maintained or checked"... The ministry said it would call on fixed route and sightseeing bus operators to properly maintain and inspect their buses, while for its part, the ministry intends to strengthen supervision of bus operators...
