DANGEROUS Cos. * Peru - Government's 'Zero Tolerance' program netted 307 unsafe buses

Lima,Peru -Living in Peru -5 Jan 2007: -- The Minister of Transportation, Veronica Zavala, informed that the government's 'Zero Tolerance' plan, aimed at getting buses that do not meet minimum safety requirements off the road, kept 307 passenger buses off of Peru's highway system... According to Zavala, a total of 11,429 buses were inspected during the period of December 22 - January 02, of which 307 were forced to return to their point of origin because of safety infractions... Thanks to the work done by undercover inspectors posing as regular passengers, the operation discovered that many drivers are pressured by company owners into arriving as quickly as possible to their destinations thereby allowing them to make more trips... This often forced the drivers to drive over the speed limit and to use alternate routes not authorized by the Peruvian government...
