* Sri Lanka - Tax concessions to replace old buses
Colombo,Sri Lanka -ColomboPage News -Sept 11, 2006: -- Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has advised the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance to exempt all the taxes levied when private bus owners buy new buses to replace old ones... Sri Lanka has a fleet of 17,000 private buses and 6500 or 35% of them are more than 10 years old. Around 90% of private buses are owned by individuals and companies own the rest. Private buses contribute to 60% of the passenger transport in Sri Lanka. Seventy thousand families directly depend on the industry, while another 30,000 families depend indirectly...

* Australia - Public transport funding pledge 'falls short'
South Australia,Aust. -ABC News online -Sept 13, 2006: -- A group representing public transport users says extra South Australian Government funding for train, tram and bus services falls short of what is needed... The Transport Minister, Pat Conlon, today announced that $10 million will be included in next week's Budget to increase public transport capacity by 5,000 passengers a day... Margaret Dingle, from People for Public Transport, has welcomed the announcement but says more is needed... "I'm not quite sure how far $10 million will go and it's over four years so that's quite limited, but certainly it's better than nothing at all," she said...
