The double whammy comprises home loan debt and record fuel costs... Petrol prices are rocketing towards $1.50 a litre and many economists tip another interest rate rise next month... Urban researchers Jago Dodson and Neil Sipe mapped dozens of areas under threat from budget strain based on income, mortgages and reliance on cars... The report, which examined cities nationwide, calls for more public transport investment, such as: -- SUBURBAN bus upgrades, with strong links to train services. -- EXTENDED train services to new fringe housing estates. -- IMPROVED footpaths and bicycle lanes to help revitalise local shopping strips...
