Study - USA - Are School Buses Making Children Sick?

PLUM BOROUGH, Pa.,USA -Pittsburgh Channel.com -May 25, 2006:L -- The school bus is considered the safest way to get your kids to school, but are buses making kids sick?... Every day, kids inhale dangerous exhaust fumes when they ride the school bus... Diesel soot includes 40 toxic air contaminants, including cancer-causing substances.... Children are particularly vulnerable because they have smaller bodies and are more likely to suffer from asthma and hospitalizations.... A new study graded states on their school bus fleets. Pennsylvania buses got a B for soot pollution. That's because the average Pennsylvania school bus is 7 years old and emits 11.9 pounds of soot each year. That's more soot per mile than a tractor-trailer... The cost of retro-fitting each bus is $8,000...
